Developing a solid all round game is important and at Essence Squash we break it down into Principles. Areas of the game which you can simplify and use to build a strong foundations upon.

Movement and Positioning

For every shot you want to execute correctly you need get in position for it. Try and be balanced when play your shot especially under pressure. Be light on your feet and make sure you bend your knees and get down to the ball. Be quick onto the ball and just as importantly be quick off the ball hunting the next shot.

Technique

A good grip plays a key role in an effective technique. Your grip should be relaxed with your fingers spread out and holding it with an open racket face. It is important to have a simple swing that can be repeated under pressure and the same swing can also used to attack when applying pressure.

Physicality

In squash there is a lot of unique dynamic movement similar to other high intensity sports and to improve and then maintain this aspect of the game you need to consider strength and conditioning training. Your program should include strength, conditioning, full body mobility and flexibility program. Whilst you can use variety of training methods to improve your physicality make sure to also add squash specific exercises as part of your fitness program. For example, depending on your level, add on some ghosting sessions in your schedule. In anything you do make sure it’s achievable and you can add more volume/intensity as you improve.

Mentality

Positive mental attitude is key, your approach mentality towards squash challenges will help you enjoy the process better. There are ways to help you stay focused and a good example is keeping a training diary. Training diary gives you time to reflect on progress being or break down and understand any challenges that you want to solve. There is no better way to understand session by writing down what’s fresh no your mind and then reflect back later to fully understand it.

Nutrition

Nutrition teaches you how to refuel your body properly especially when your activity levels increase by playing sports. Understanding Nutrition is beneficial for both sportsperson and anyone who wants a more healthier lifestyle.
